All ages are welcome COFFEE MORNING and BRING & BUY in aid of the HOSPICE OF ST FRANCIS Tuesday, 7th September 10.30 am at West View, Bucks Hill (opp. Quickmoor Lane) There will be stalls for cakes, plants, bric-a-brac, etc. Sue Ellis INVITATION TO SARRATT VILLAGE HARVEST SUPPER Everyone in the Benefice is invited - young and old alike - to our traditional Sarratt Village Harvest Supper. This will take place at Jenks` Barn, Little Sarratt Hall, Moor Lane, Sarratt (courtesy of Diane and Tony Quale) on Saturday 2nd October. Doors will open at 7pm. Supper will be served from 7.30pm. Please bring your own drinks. Tickets £6 each, available from John Guy (267549). Transport can be arranged for those who require it. Proceeds will be shared between Watford New Hope Trust and the Bishop of St Albans` Harvest Appeal. Phone John now to be sure of a ticket. RESTORE HOPE LATIMER EVENTS There are now full programmes at the back of the churches. BIKE ‘N HIKE for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Historic Churches Trust The BHHCT, which is non-denominational, is organizing a sponsored cycle ride (and walk) between churches on Saturday September 11th between 10 am and 6pm. Half of every cyclist`s and walker`s sponsor money goes to the Trust and half goes to the church of their choice. We also require people to man the churches on the day, who can also be sponsored. Alan Poulton – 01923 260295 (e-mail alan.poulton@talktalk.net) ST ALBAN`S DIOCESE ‘EXPLORING SPIRITUALITY DAY` will take place on Saturday 23rd October at St Andrew`s Church, Kimbolton Rd, Bedford. The keynote speaker will be the Rev Nicholas Cranfield, who is Arts Correspondent for the Church Times. There will be workshops about singing, painting, psalm writing … For a full programme and application form please see the back of churches (or village hall). There will be a group of us going. SPECIAL LECTURE ON ISLAM AND THE CHRISTIANITY Dr George Sabra will be giving a special lecture on the subject: “Christian Theological Responses to Islam in the Near East” on Friday, 29th October 2010, 7.30pm, at St Stephen`s Church Hall, Watling Street, St Albans (parking available). The lecture aims to help churches in the West become more aware of the situation in the Middle East and how as Christians we can consider and respond. Everyone is welcome to attend. MUSICAL EVENTS AT ST PAUL`S In October there will be two musical evenings at St Paul`s. The first is on Sunday 3 October at 6.30 when there will be a Choral Concert given by the choir, friends & soloists with orchestral accompaniment. The programme will include part of John Rutter`s Psalmfest (Psalms 23, 27, 100, 121), Handel`s Zadok the Priest, Andrew Llod Webber`s Pie Jesu, The heavens are telling from Haydn`s Creation & more. Admission free with retiring collection. On Sunday 17 October at 6.30, there will be a service of Choral Evensong as part of our Harvest Festival celebration. The choir will sing a setting of the Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis by Herbert Brewer, Evening Hymn by Henry Balfour Gardiner & the Blessing by Jonathan Willcocks. Harvest hymns for the congregation. NEXT MEN`S BREAKFAST: this will be on Saturday 9 October, 8.00 for 8.15 at Hunton Park. The speaker will be David McIlroy, barrister, theological lecturer & writer. His subject will be `The Common Good: is there an agreed defintion & how can it be achieved?` David contributed a chapter on this topic to the extremely helpful book `God & Government` which was published earlier this year & has been studied by the reading group. AMERSHAM MILLENIUM LECTURES: ‘God beyond Church`, presented by Sheila Cassidy, Doctor, Author & Psychotherapist, Thursday 16th September, 8.00 pm at St Michael and All Angels, 70, Sycamore Road, Amersham. COFFEE MORNING FOR HENRY FRASER CHARITY Thursday 16 September There will be a Coffee Morning on the morning of Thursday 16th September in aid of the Henry Fraser Charity. The event will be held at `September Cottage` in Croft Lane, Chipperfield, and we will be selling cakes (could you make some?), bring and buy and a raffle. Henry Fraser is eighteen years old and lives with his family in Scatterdells Lane. Just over a year ago he was paralysed in an accident while on holiday in Portugal. His family and friends are raising funds to purchase a special machine to keep his muscles in tone. WALKING THE DEANERY MARATHON FOR ST OSWALD`S PARISH PROJECT Our plan is to walk two half marathons on consecutive days. The first, on Wednesday 22nd September will take us from St Oswald`s to Chipperfield, through Commonwood, and then on to Bovingdon. We will return via Flaunden ( I know it`s not in the Deanery but it`s more or less en route) and Holy Cross at Sarratt to Croxley. If anyone would like to join us for part or all of the route they would be very welcome. Contact Brian Thomson 01923 226850. Sponsorship would be welcome too. We are raising funds for St O`s Parish project for this year. We are helping to fund a USPG project in the Windward Islands Diocese of the Caribbean (i.e. the islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Grenada).
